  1. Had similar issue with a client running Windows XP SP2 and pretty much worked through suggestions here to no avail.
  2. After cleaning what viruses I could, disabling some services to isolate the BSOD on startup problem (Symantec, likely corrupted by virus, was cause), I could start PC but not install new
  3. What eventually got it working.
  4. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, please please contact me!!!

Type the following at the prompt and press Enter. %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister This unregisters the msiexec.exe file in the C:\Windows\syswow64 directory.
