Can I somehow get Windows 7 on that partition in order to recover to it if I ever have problems? I will never purchase an HP laptop again after my experiences. 1. If you are installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you should do this from a CD rather than by online download (your local IT staff should have a CD for this). Years ago I used to use a progam called 'Go Back' untill that let me down as well!. The software delete the restore point every time I turn off my computer. To create a Windows startup disk, insert a floppy disk into the drive of a similarly configured, working Windows XP system, launch My Computer, right-click the floppy disk icon, and select System Restore Failed To Extract The File Not surprising, since the previous owner wiped the hard disk.

Some advice is given on doing this in a separate document. So if there's a problem rooted in the Boot.ini file, it can render Windows XP incapable of booting correctly. You start it up without anything and it says ntldr is missing. In a moment, you'll see the License Agreement page and will need to press [F8] to acknowledge that you agree.

Try this after trying System Restore in Safe Mode but before doing a full reinstall. I have a a1517x, with a build ID of 63NAemMPA3. After losing years of stuff (none of which was really that important, I guess), I started backing up regularly. Hard drives are checaper than partition magic, these days.

If Windows is stuck during the update installation process, see instead my How To Recover From a Frozen Windows Update Installation tutorial.  Are you sure the update that was installed a Booting into Windows, I didn't find an HP Tools menu option or anything in System Tools etc. Select Safe Mode in the boot menu that appears and press Enter. (If you don’t see the boot menu, restart your computer and try again.) Launch System Restore and use it
