System Restore Just Won't Turn Off


Whenever I try to run System Restore it returns to me saying "The filename, directory name,or volume label syntax is incorrect. (0x8007007B) System Restore will now close." What should I do? Also the backup drive was turned off on my computer, which does not make sense. I get frozen on the black screen, then it asks if I want Windows to restore to a previous date, but most of the time (not always) it can't.
