I'm still pretty new to Linux, so I haven't been doing a whole lot. I've tried everything!!! I am able to login through the command line (ctrl-alt-f1) just fine, just am not able to login in through the GUI. Using del Explorer.exe in the command window.

Hopefully this thread will save many people lots of time in the future. In the cmd prompt went to c:\Windows, found the Explorer.exe file and deleted it. I had been trying everything.....just about to give up and take it into a repair place. news I had to re-image it some time before, because of a spyware issue, but this trick I did not know.
