I did solve the original problem - the computer started working randomly and I was able to run CHKDSK to get it semi-functional. This is terrible advice to be giving out to peple who may not know that much about computers. I am seeking out Safe Mode because my laptop gets an error message preventing me from entering my password successfully. Keyboard works fine in Safe Mode.
