How I would make a small shared hosting service for 10 friends and myself for free with an old IBM computer with Windows XP Home, 512mb of RAM, 40gb hard drive space, and a Pentium 4 2.4ghz processor?

Answer

Calling your web hosting would be great as they can give you the best option. This is also possible using either of these web servers one is abyss web server http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/ and another is apache http://httpd.apache.org/ . How will this work? Just put the files you want to host into the htdocs folder. This is how to access your files; http://”yourdomain/ip”/ (name of file or folder) for example it should look like this http://58.486.361.15/hi.doc. However this only applies to the PC where you are hosting those files.

I am currently using Linux hosting. I am running two wordpress blog and another site build in php. I need to host asp site too so I will need to shift to windows hosting. Which one is the best but not necessarily expensive? Does wordpress and php work in windows hosting? Can I transfer the files of my site from Linux hosting directly to the new windows hosting with out downloading it?

Answer

This would depend on the host but I suggest that you get the Godaddy Deluxe plan. Here is the site address where you can get the plan http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy. When you are in the site select windows hosting located at the top of the plans description instead of Linux which is selected by default. The deluxe plan supports both php and wordpress it’s just what you need. You can transfer the data of your website from Linux hosting directly to the new windows hosting without downloading it but you need to set up windows first.

I thought I’d try building my own website but don’t really have a clue what I am doing. I registered a domain name last night (a .co.uk one) and the same site offers web hosting. As it’s just a hobby at the moment I don’t want to pay out too much expense so there’s two £3.99 per month options. One with linux and one with windows 2003. What’s the difference?

Answer

When choosing a server you have to take into consideration what you want in a server. Windows server is more inclined to virus attack compared to Linux which is more secured in terms of the site. To connect to a database you will need to learn all about MySQL (probably) and writing PHP web pages.

Should a website hosting really be running Windows server or do respectable Hosting companies run Linux?

Answer

Nearly all website is hosted by Microsoft on Windows servers, but they can be administered by several servers. Most think that Windows servers is cheaper in terms of administrators cost because of the graphical user interface, but total cost of ownership is greater for Windows servers because of the hardware requirements and less MTTF. I say NetWare servers would run without rebooting for 11 months, compared to Windows NT4 and 2000 servers that are lightly loaded and need to be rebooted every week or two, or their processes would not run or slow down due to memory leaks. NetWare and Unix servers, maybe tricky to set up and tune, however they would run without attention. Windows web servers can’t run PHP while Unix servers can on the other hand, execute PHP, a very dynamic server side scripting language.

Answer

If you are looking for a new hosting company do not go for the local ones as they provide limited storage compared with main hosting companies where they are more reliable and offers superb customer support. Here are ecommerce windows hosting sites that you can try: http://hostingsitereviews.com/hostgator.htm http://hostingsitereviews.com/startlogic.htm http://hostingsitereviews.com/midphase.htm To help you choose, try to read the reviews here: http://hostingsitereviews.com/index.php/HostingReviews/Windows-Hosting-Reviews/

Question

I use linux on my laptop and desktop. I am a webmaster for a local business, but their site was on a windows hosting account before I was the webmaster. I would like to use .php and mysql on the site which would give me the ability to do all kinds of cool things with it. The site currently is only html and flash, so asp databases or anything. If I have my host switch the site to linux servers, will the site go unchanged or will it get all messed up?

Answer

Using HTML will not be any different. You will have no problems using php on Linux as they work better together besides providing you more options not readily available on IIS, like the use of .htaccess file. Just remember though to always make a backup of the site before changing to the new location. The back up will ensure that you can transfer the site back should the switchover fails.

Question

what exactly should I check to monitor the health of my server, is there a checklist or tips? where should I start from?

Answer

Free Port Scanner Software links to free port scanner software to analyze your system for open ports to help you secure it. Free Network Monitoring links to free network monitoring tools & software to analyze network performance and functionality. Most security experts recommend that you log into your computer system as a regular user instead of Administrator. Download free spyware removal tools and utilities to help you block, or at least detect and remove spyware and adware that can infest your computer. There are wireless IDS (intrusion detection systems), wireless scanners that detect hidden networks and access points You can protect your wireless data by enabling encryption. To reduce the possibility of an unauthorized party accessing your network, you can disable DHCP and manually assign static IP addresses to your devices. Intrusion detection (IDS) and prevention (IPS) software helps identify and respond to malicious or suspicious network activity on your network and stop any hackers, viruses, trojans or other malware from spreading. Remember, to check firewall logs often for any unusual activity. You could also browse sites to update your needs in protecting your server.

Question

what the difference is between linux web hosting and windows web hosting. I made my site by dreamweaver , which is better?

Answer

Linux is one of the more popular operating systems on the Web because it is so cheap to install. Windows is also a popular operating system because it has a lot of support. Both Windows and Linux offer FTP access to your files, but only Linux will generally offer telnet or ssh access. FTP is the transfer of files from your hard drive to your Web server while telnet and SSH are the opening of the window directly on the Web server and manipulate files right there, usually using Unix command line commands. Both Windows and Linux servers will serve HTML pages and JavaScript. CGI and Perl access are often found on both Windows and Linux servers, but it is more distinctive on Linux. Many hosting systems offer PHP, ASP, and ColdFusion which gives you a lot of flexibility. PHP is more often found on Linux systems, while ASP is more often found on Windows. ColdFusion can be found on both. If you want to run a powerful Web site, then you’ll need a database. The two most popular are mySQL and Access. mySQL runs on both Linux and Windows, but is more often found on Linux servers while access is only available for Windows. So when choosing a hosting server, find one that has the options you want, rather than worrying about what operating system they are running on the back end.
