I love it in Torino Italy but nearly anywhere in Italy is great.

Friends have told me they greatly enjoyed New Year’s in London. I have experienced the “Sylvester” celebrations on the bridges across the Alster in Hamburg. It was quite an incredible party. The fireworks are so plentiful that older people have flashbacks to the firebombings of World War II! It was a great experience. I also spent Sylvester in a wonderful little village called Barbian in the Italian Süd Tirol Alps. The whole village poured out into the main street and blew off fireworks and waved sparklers. It was such fun being part of it. But I think Hamburg’s spontaneous fireworks on the Alster bridges were the most incredible New Year’s observances I’ve been part of, apart from the lavish welcome Stockholm gave the new Milennium 2000-2001. I don’t think the extraordinary fireworks and crowds are typical of New Year’s in that lovely city.

Edinburgh and its world-famous Hogmanay street party and fireworks?
